Defensive Reads

Watch the backside defensive end or OLB alignment, since a wide 9-technique or heavy outside shade signals the defense is sitting on the QB keep. Post-snap, key the read defender's first step: if he crashes inside toward the HB mesh, that confirms the QB keep read; if he stays wide and squeezes the QB lane, expect the handoff. Beware user-controlled defenders spying the QB from depth, since a disciplined spy or lurking linebacker can erase the keep option and force a predictable handoff. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support usually lets the power blocks win at the point of attack, while zone shells with a robber underneath can jump the pulling guard's lane.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, check the box count and identify whether the defense has a true read defender left unblocked on the edge, since a crashing 4-3 end or spread out 3-4 OLB is what makes this scheme work.

Look for light boxes (six defenders or fewer) against 12 personnel before calling this, since heavy boxes with an extra safety in the box will outnumber your blockers.

Use this play on early downs (1st and 2nd, or 3rd and short) to keep the defense honest and set up RPO Power Peek and RPO Power Alert Glance later in the drive off the same look.

If the defense starts sending the read defender hard every snap, counter with Buck Sweep Read Opt or Mtn Buck Sweep from this same set to attack the opposite edge with a similar mesh point.

Motion or shift the wing TE pre-snap to get a numbers advantage and force the defense to declare their run fit before the snap.
