Midline Read Option lines up from Shotgun Wing Slot Wk with 12 personnel, giving the offense two inline tight ends to the play side and two receivers stacked wide to the boundary. The diagram shows the QB and HB in a read mesh point with the offensive line blocking down at the midline, leaving the playside defensive tackle or end unblocked as the true read key. This is a pure run play built on the give or keep option: the QB reads the interior defender and either hands off on the inside zone track (yellow arrow) or pulls it and works outside on the keep (red arrow). Primary progression is line reading, not route reading: identify the unblocked interior defender first, then work to the alley defender if you pull the ball.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check for a 3-4 or 4-3 base front with the nose or three technique sitting directly in the midline read window, since that alignment forces a clean binary read for the QB. Watch linebacker depth: if the mike and will are stacked tight to the line, they are likely scraping fast to the mesh point, which favors the give since interior gaps stay clogged. Post-snap, key the read defender's first step: if he crashes down the line hard, pull the ball and attack the edge before the alley defender can fill. Zone-heavy shells with safeties rotating late into the box can shut this down by adding a numbers advantage inside, so watch for late safety rotation as a pre-snap tell. User-controlled defenders spying the QB from depth are the biggest threat to the keep option, so identify any defender hanging in the mid-field before the snap and lean toward the give if one is present.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check the box count and identify which interior defensive lineman is aligned in the midline read window, since he is the true key for the give-keep decision.
Use this on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when defenses are showing base fronts, since exotic sub packages with extra DBs weaken the interior run fit.
If the defense shows a heavy inside shell with the read defender crashing hard down the line every snap, hot route the playside TE into a quick seal block and commit to the keep read to attack the edge.
Pair this with Mtn Read Option and Buck Sweep Read Opt in the same set so the defense cannot key on one landmark, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Sprinkle in RPO Peek Slant or RPO Read Bubble from the same formation to keep second level defenders honest, which slows down scrape exchange and widens your keep lane.
