Read Option out of Shotgun Wing Slot Wk is a pure zone run play built on the classic QB and HB mesh at the mesh point, with the offensive line executing an inside zone blocking scheme up front. The two vertical stems on the outside are just receivers releasing upfield to occupy corners and keep run support out of the box, not actual route options in the diagram. The primary read is the QB reading the play side defensive end at the mesh point to decide between handing off on the zone track or pulling it and attacking the edge himself.
Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on every snap the offense will start pulling the ball for QB keepers, so spy or contain him. Key the alignment of the second level linebackers, if they are stacked tight to the box this zone run has a natural cutback lane the defense must fill fast. User the backside defensive end or a linebacker to force the QB to make a decision under pressure rather than letting the mesh point read develop clean. Watch for safeties cheating up into the box pre-snap, that signals run support is loaded and the defense is selling out to stop the zone read. Contain rushes from the edge are the counter, since they take away the QB keeper lane and force the ball back inside into a cleaned up box.
Check the box count before the snap and only call this when you have a numbers advantage against base fronts of six or fewer in the box.
Use the QB pull as a change of pace weapon against aggressive defensive ends who consistently crash down on the handoff read.
Pair this with RPO Zone Read Bubble and RPO Peek Slant from the same set so the defense has to respect both the give and the perimeter throw off similar formation and mesh action.
On third and short, this play punishes linebackers who bite on run fits too early because the QB keeper can bounce outside the alley defender.
Avoid calling this into heavy blitz packages with an unblocked extra rusher crashing the mesh point unless you have a hot route or check ready.
