Defensive Reads
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he steps up hard on the run fake the play-action window opens for the deep out and vertical shots. Identify single high versus two high safeties before the snap, single high man or Cover 3 is where this play hits hardest since the deep out attacks the flat to intermediate seam. Watch the flat defender or slot corner, if he sits on the deep out route the quarterback should climb the ladder to the vertical route behind him. Key the corner's leverage on the outside vertical, if he is playing inside shade with safety help over the top this concept is not a good shot, look to check down or throw the out route only. Beware disguised blitzes off the edge since the play-action set requires the offensive line to hold up, a fast defensive end crashing the mesh point can blow up the pocket before routes develop.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs or in shot situations like 2nd and short when defenses expect the inverted veer run and bite on the play fake.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: single high safety shells are ideal since the corner route can attack the void vacated by a rotating safety.
If you see man coverage on the outside with no safety help over the top, hot route the outside go into a comeback or just trust the vertical against a beaten corner.
Pair this play with Inside Zone and Read Option earlier in a drive so the play fake actually holds linebackers, then punish aggressive run fits with this shot.
Avoid throwing into two-high shells with soft corners playing off, since the underneath out route will not have room and the verticals get bracketed.
