PA Inverted Veer out of Wing Slot Wk shows a play action shot off the inverted veer run fake, designed to hit deep once the linebackers and safeties bite on the run action. Off the fake, one receiver runs a deep vertical up the numbers while a second receiver crosses over the top on a deep dig/crosser that settles behind the linebacker level, and the third route works underneath from the backside with an out breaking pattern along the sideline. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser working across the middle, then bends the corner route or vertical if the safety rotates to take away the crosser, using the underneath out as the checkdown against a hard closing linebacker.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating down into the box, a stacked box with one deep safety confirms the defense is selling out on the inverted veer run and opens up the play action shot. Key the play side linebacker at the snap, if he steps up hard to fill the veer mesh point he cannot get depth on the deep crosser, making that route the first read. If the defense shows an aggressive edge blitz or overload pressure pre-snap, get the ball out quickly on the underneath route since the play action fake slows your protection and extends the drop time.

Usage Tips

Sell the inverted veer fake by holding the RS momentarily on the mesh point animation before releasing into your route read, this freezes linebackers and safeties in run fits.

Use this on early downs or in run heavy personnel situations where the defense has shown two high safeties or single high aggression against your ground game, the play action tax is much higher against defenses respecting the run.

Hot route the underneath out into a quick flat or speed out against man coverage if you see a linebacker walked out over the slot, this gives you a faster access throw when the safety squeezes the crosser.
