The primary read progression starts with the option route in the flat off the play-action fake, moves to the deep corner if a safety bites on the run or the linebacker overcommits, and comes back to the comeback route as the checkdown against zone drops or heavy pressure.
Defensive Reads
Check safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties are shaded deep expect Cover 2 or Cover 4 which invites the option route matchup against a linebacker. Watch linebacker alignment at the snap, if they step up hard on the play-action fake the option route and the corner route both open up behind them. Identify man coverage by seeing if the slot defender mirrors the TE's release, since the option route is designed to beat man leverage with its stem and break. Look for a user-controlled defender lurking in the shallow flat, this is the biggest threat to the option route and can bait a quick checkdown mistake. Cover 3 zone drops with a deep third safety will take away the corner route, so the comeback route becomes the higher value read against that shell.

Run this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage where defenses are honoring the run look from Wing Slot Wk personnel.
Read the flat defender and the linebacker level before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the box the option route will have room to work after the play-action fake.
Use the option route as your first read since it beats man coverage and blitz-heavy fronts by getting the TE into space quickly against a defender who has to respect the run fake.
Hot route the comeback route deeper if you see a soft zone shell like Cover 3 so it sits down in the void between the corner and the safety.
