RPO Power Alert Bubble is a run-pass option built off inside zone/power run action with a bubble screen alert to the slot receiver. Up front the offensive line executes power blocking as the running back takes the handoff read on the interior, while the diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep comeback breaking route to occupy the corner and safety over the top. The QB's primary read is the alert defender (usually a flat or slot defender): if that defender crashes down on the run action, pull and throw the bubble screen; if he sits or widens, hand the ball off and let the power scheme work downhill.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify the slot or overhang defender assigned to the bubble side, if he is aligned tight to the line of scrimmage he is likely crashing on run action and the bubble throw wins immediately. Watch safety depth before the snap, a single-high safety often signals man coverage underneath which makes the backside comeback route a viable answer against aggressive corners. Post-snap, key the alert defender's first two steps, hesitation or an inside crash means the QB is pulling the ball for the bubble screen. User-controlled defenders sitting on the slot receiver's bubble route can bait the QB into a bad throw, so use a linebacker or nickel to spy the flat if you suspect RPO tendencies. Overloaded boxes and inside blitzes disrupt the power run element, forcing the offense into the bubble screen against a defense that has already rotated numbers to stop it.
Usage Tips
Check the numbers advantage to the bubble side before the snap, if you have two or more receivers blocking for one defender in the flat, the bubble is already a favorable throw.
Use the comeback route on the backside as a built-in answer against off-man or press corners who bail hard, since it settles in the void once the defender sinks.
Against teams that spam blitz-happy defenses, hand the ball off, because a crashing edge or overloaded box confirms the RPO throw read is dead and the interior run lane opens up.
