HB Slip Screen out of Shotgun Wing Slot Wk is a screen play built to bait aggressive pass rushers and blitz-heavy defenses. The two outside receivers run vertical clear-out routes to pull the corners and safeties downfield, while the TE at the line runs a flat-to-out route that also occupies underneath defenders, and the offensive line sets up a delayed slip block to spring the HB out to the flat. The primary read is the HB himself: check for defenders crashing the backfield, let the screen develop, and throw as soon as the RB slips through the line into the open flat with blockers in front.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing Cover 0 or man press across the board, since those looks leave nobody to sit on the screen and get gashed by the HB. Watch for blitz packages with delayed linebacker drops, if a linebacker sits back and reads the backfield instead of rushing, he can jump the screen and blow it up for a loss. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender lurking near the line of scrimmage, a smart user player will sit and wait on the HB slip release rather than bite on the vertical routes. Zone coverage shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 can be dangerous against this play if the underneath linebackers stay disciplined and do not bite on the TE flat route, since they can rally quickly to the screen. If the defense shows a spy or a defender staying home on the running back at the snap, abort the screen mentally and consider checking down elsewhere since the blocking angles will be compromised.
Usage Tips
Call this play against defenses showing pressure pre-snap, especially overload blitzes or nano blitz packages that send extra rushers off the edge.
Use your pre-snap read to identify man coverage or Cover 0 looks, since the two vertical clear-out routes will pull corners and safeties away from the box and open the screen lane instantly.
Do not force the throw immediately, let the offensive line get out in front of the HB and hold the throw button just long enough for the screen to set up before releasing.
Pair this play with RPO Peek Post or RPO Zone Read Bubble in the same set so the defense has to respect both the quick game and the delayed screen, keeping linebackers honest and slowing their blitz triggers.
Best used on early downs or after a run play like Inside Zone has established tendencies, since defenses will be flowing hard to stop the run and will over-pursue right into the screen.
