Breakdown

Double Post out of Shotgun Wing Slot Wk uses 12 personnel to send two receivers vertical up the seams before breaking them inside on post angles, stacking one post behind the other for a natural high low read. The Y receiver from the wing runs a quick flat route underneath to hold the linebacker or nickel defender in the shallow zone, while the backside X releases on a deep drag across the field as a checkdown against pressure. This is a pure man and zone beater with no play-action or blocking gimmicks: the primary read is the outside post first, then the inside post if the safety jumps the first route, with the flat and drag as your bailout options against a hard blitz.

Defensive Reads

Watch both safeties before the snap: if they are aligned deep and wide in a Cover 2 or Cover 4 shell, expect the outside post to win against the seam void. If you see a single high safety in Cover 3 or Cover 1, the inside post becomes the higher value throw since one defender has to cover twice the field. Post snap, key the flow of the safeties: if the deep defender bites on the first post route, the second post behind it will be wide open for a big play. User controlled lurk defenders sitting in the middle of the field can jump the inside post, so if you see a user drop into that throwing lane, reset to the flat or drag route instead. Disguised man blitzes with press corners can disrupt the timing of both post routes, making the underneath flat route the safer real time answer.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment because Double Posts is designed to exploit both Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells if the safeties are shaded too wide or too deep.

Against two high shells, throw the outside post first since it attacks the seam before the safety can rotate over the top.

Against single high, work the inside post since the free safety has more ground to cover against two vertical breaking routes at once.

Use the flat route from the wing as your answer versus press man coverage or when the defense brings a blitz and you need a quick outlet.

Pair this play with RPO Peek Post or RPO Glance Post earlier in a series so the defense starts respecting the run action, opening up the double post shots later in the drive.

Best called on second or third and medium to long when you need an explosive chunk play against defenses sitting in zone shells.
