Breakdown

HB Base out of Shotgun Wing Slot Wk is a straight dive run designed to hit the middle of the field between the tackles. The diagram shows the offensive line blocking down with the interior linemen combo blocking the front, and the HB taking a direct handoff and reading the initial hole created by the center and guards before pressing north. This is a downhill run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is the A gap first, bouncing to the B gap if the defensive tackle penetrates or a linebacker fills the initial lane.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is in a base 4-3 or 3-4 look with linebackers stacked tight to the line, since light boxes with off-ball linebackers give this dive play the best lanes. Check safety depth, a single high safety with linebackers crashing downhill signals a run blitz look that can be countered by bouncing outside. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled linebacker flowing hard to the play side A gap, that is the primary defender to read for a cutback lane. This play struggles against stacked box run defense calls with extra defenders at the line, and it gets stopped cold by interior nano blitzes that shoot the A and B gaps simultaneously. If the defense shows a two high shell with linebackers backing off pre-snap, expect a softer front and a cleaner initial hole for the dive.

Usage Tips

Run this out of 12 personnel when you want to establish tempo against base fronts and force the defense to respect the run before you dial up RPO Peek Slant or RPO Glance Post from the same set. Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or fewer in the box this is an efficient gap gain, if they load the box with seven or eight defenders check to Inside Zone or a play-action shot instead. Use this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to keep the defense honest and set up explosive shots later in the drive. Hot route the TE to a chip block if you are facing an aggressive edge blitzer off the slot alignment. Mix this with RPO Zone Peek and RPO Power Peek from the same formation so the defense cannot key on run action versus RPO action, forcing linebackers to hesitate at the snap.
