Strong I Close takes the base Strong I look and tightens both receivers down into the numbers, splitting them just outside the tackle box while the fullback stays offset to the strong side and the halfback sits directly behind the quarterback. That compressed alignment is the whole point: instead of the standard wide splits you get in other Strong I sets, both wideouts start inside leverage, which forces corners to either press in tight quarters or bail and concede the flat. With 21 personnel on the field, defenses default to base or run-heavy nickel, so you are usually working against linebackers in coverage rather than an extra defensive back.
The compressed splits create natural traffic for the mesh family. Mesh, Mesh Post, and FL Drive all turn into legitimate man beaters here because the crossing routes start closer together, meaning the rub happens faster and closer to the line of scrimmage than it would from spread splits. Against man coverage that is a nightmare for linebackers trying to carry the fullback or halfback out of the backfield. On the zone beater side, Y Trail, PA Post Dig, and PA Deep Cross give you high low and dig over drag combos that attack the vacated middle when the safeties rotate to the tight side.
The run game is where this set earns its keep in play calling tendency. HB Dive, HB Dive Weak, FB Dive, HB Off Tackle, HB Stretch, HB Zone Wk, HB Zone Toss, Quick Toss, and Counter Weak give you a complete downhill and outside stretch menu from the same look, and the tight receiver splits mean your wideouts are already in position to crack block or wall off the second level. Layer on the Gadget tag with HB Slash Fk End Arnd, End Around, and PA End Around and you get misdirection that punishes users who overcommit their linebacker to the dive read. The play action package (PA Deep, PA Lions Shot, PA Scissors, PA Sprint HB Flat, PA Slide, PA Curls) sells hard off those run looks, and DBL Stutter Go, Stutter Go's, Inside Post, and Double Post give you the deep shot when a safety bites down.
Read the corners pre-snap. If they align outside the compressed splits, call Inside Post, Double Post, or Stutter Go's and attack the seam. If they press inside, flip to WR Out or DBL Outs and use the boundary.
Against man coverage, Mesh and Mesh Post are your money calls. Hot route the fullback to a flat or angle to add a third layer underneath and give yourself an outlet if the mesh gets walled.
Use HB Dive and HB Off Tackle on early downs to establish the run read, then run PA Sprint HB Flat, PA Post Dig, or PA Lions Shot off the identical look once the linebackers start crashing.
Save the Gadget calls (End Around, HB Slash Fk End Arnd, PA End Around) for second and medium or when you have seen a user linebacker aggressively fill the A gap two or three plays in a row.
Against Cover 3 and Cover 4, Y Trail and PA Deep Cross give you the dig over drag high low read into the vacated middle. Motion a receiver to confirm man versus zone before the snap if you are unsure of the shell.
