Slot Flex takes the standard Strong I backfield and flexes one of the receivers into the slot, breaking the base 21 personnel look that normally packs both wideouts on the numbers. You still get the fullback stacked in front of the halfback and a tight end attached to the strong side, so the run box stays heavy, but the flexed slot receiver gives you a legitimate three-man passing strength without ever leaving 21 personnel. Defenses that check into 4-3 or 3-4 base to stop the downhill run game now have to cover a slot with a linebacker or drag a safety down, which is exactly the mismatch this set is built to hunt.
The run concepts here are the full Strong I menu: Power O, Counter Weak, Inside Zone Split, HB Sweep, HB Dive, and HB Lead Draw all get the fullback as a lead or kickout blocker, and the flexed slot pulls a defender out of the box before the ball is snapped. That is the real value. You are running gap scheme power football against a defense that is one body lighter at the point of attack. Stretch Alert Smoke adds an RPO element where you can bail on the run and hit the smoke to the flexed receiver if the defense leaves it uncovered.
In the pass game, Slot Flex leans on play action off that heavy run identity. PA Power O, PA Post Shot, and PA Boot Slide all sell the same blocking track the run plays use, and the flexed slot works the vacated middle. Dagger, Curl Flat, Double Slant, and China Special give you the answers against both shells, while HB Slip Screen punishes aggressive interior pressure. The Gadget tag reflects that this set is designed to look like one thing and function as another.
Read the slot defender pre-snap. Linebacker walked out on the flexed receiver means you attack with Double Slant or the slot dig on Dagger. A safety rolled down means the box is light, so hand it off on Power O or Counter Weak.
On second and short or third and short, run the play action off your most-used gap scheme. PA Power O and PA Post Shot punish defenses that have started guessing run and crashing linebackers downhill.
Hot route the tight end on a drag or the fullback into a flat to give yourself a quick outlet against blitz-heavy users, because base protection here does not hold up against overloads.
Use Stretch Alert Smoke as a free-yardage play when the defense is out of position or you want to test whether the slot is genuinely covered before committing to your run script.
Alternate HB Sweep and HB Dive to keep opponents from over-committing to the tackle box, then run Inside Zone Split once they start widening their front seven pursuit.
