Breakdown

Stretch Alert Smoke is an outside zone run out of the Strong I Slot Flex set with 21 personnel, and the diagram shows the offensive line flowing laterally with the HB taking a wide aiming point toward the sideline before the yellow arrow shows him cutting upfield off his blockers' zone flow. The two X receivers run short hitches or quick outs at the bottom of the screen, giving the quarterback a smoke route alert if the defense shows a heavy box or blitz look pre-snap. This is fundamentally a zone run beater against light boxes, with the smoke route serving as a built-in answer to overloaded fronts or press coverage on the perimeter, and the primary read progression starts with the pre-snap defender count before the HB presses the line and reads his blockers' zone flow for the cutback lane.

Defensive Reads

Watch for safeties cheating down into the box pre-snap, which signals run support and makes the smoke route the correct answer against aggressive fronts. If the cornerback on the smoke side is playing off coverage with a soft cushion, the smoke throw is nearly automatic since he cannot close the distance in time. Key the play side linebacker's first step after the snap, if he flows hard outside to string out the zone, the HB should look for the cutback lane behind him. Defenses with quick-trigger edge blitzes off the play side can blow up the stretch action, so recognize overload blitz alignments and be ready to hit the smoke route as a hot answer. Against Cover 2 or Cover 3 zone shells with linebackers sitting in short zones, the smoke route can get squeezed, so trust the outside zone run action instead of forcing the perimeter throw.

Usage Tips

Check the defensive box count before the snap and throw the smoke route immediately if you see six or more defenders crowding the line of scrimmage.

Use the FB as a lead blocker to identify which linebacker is flowing hardest to the play side, then key your HB's cut off that linebacker's pursuit angle.

Run this play on early downs like first or second and short to medium distance since the outside zone action sets up both cutback lanes and the perimeter smoke as a pressure release valve.

Pair this with Inside Zone Split and HB Dive from the same set to keep the defense guessing between inside and outside zone tracks without changing your personnel or presnap look.

Sequence this play with PA Power O or PA Boot Slide later in a series once the defense starts overplaying the smoke route, since the run action will hold linebackers and open up play-action shots.
