Breakdown

HB Sweep from the Strong I Slot Flex set is a straightforward outside run play with no pass options attached. The diagram shows both wide receivers running vertical routes to hold the corners deep while the offensive line and lead blockers pull to seal the edge, giving the HB a lane to bounce outside. This is a run play designed to attack the edge with numbers, not a zone or man beater in the passing sense, and the primary read is the HB reading the edge blocks (TE and FB or lead blocker) to decide whether to bounce it outside or cut up inside the alley depending on how the defensive line and outside linebackers flow.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and count the box, this play struggles against eight man fronts or heavy run blitz packages stacked to the play side. Watch for cornerbacks aligned in press or squat coverage since they can crash down on the sweep quickly if they read run flow early. Post-snap, key the edge defender and outside linebacker, if they stay home and do not get sealed by the pulling blockers the HB has no bounce lane. User controlled defenders spying the edge or flowing hard outside can blow this up before it develops, so this play is more effective when the defense is playing conservative zone shells with linebackers reading run second. Against man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support, the vertical routes from the outside receivers can hold corners deep enough to open the edge for the sweep.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive front to confirm the defense is not stacked with extra run defenders on the play side edge before snapping.

Call this out of Strong I Slot Flex on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are more likely to play base personnel instead of loading the box.

If the defense shows a wide nine or crashes the edge defender hard, hot route the fullback or TE to adjust the kick out block angle so the HB has a cleaner bounce lane.

Pair HB Sweep with HB Dive and Power O from the same set so defenses cannot key on the sweep action based on your formation tendency.

Against aggressive user linebackers flowing hard to the edge, mix in PA Boot Slide or PA Power O afterward to punish overpursuit with play action off the same look.
