Inside Zone Split is a run play out of Strong I in the Slot Flex set with 21 personnel, showing the fullback and HB split behind the QB with a zone blocking scheme up front. The offensive line flows laterally to seal running lanes while the fullback leads through the hole, giving the HB a downhill read between the tackles. This is a pure run play designed to attack zone run fits by forcing linebackers to flow with the zone blocking before the HB makes his one cut. The primary read progression is for the HB to press the frontside gap, then cut to the backside cutback lane if the frontside is clogged.
Defensive Reads
Look for linebackers stacked tight behind the defensive line, which signals they are keying the run fit and will flow hard with zone blocking. If the strong safety creeps down into the box pre-snap, that is an extra run defender and you should expect a fast cutback fill. This play beats base 4-3 and 3-4 fronts that overcommit to the frontside gap since the cutback lane opens naturally against zone flow. Odd fronts with a nose tackle shaded to the play side can clog the initial read, so be ready to bounce to the backside gap immediately. Watch for a linebacker blitz off the edge unblocked, since the fullback lead block is designed to pick up an extra rusher but can be beaten by a well timed nano blitz.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short when defenses are not expecting a heavy run look. Check the defensive front pre-snap for stacked box counts and if you see eight or more defenders in the box, consider audibling to a play-action shot instead. Manually control the fullback at the snap to help seal the edge or pick off a blitzing linebacker for a bigger gain. Pair this with PA Power O and PA Boot Slide later in the series so the defense respects the run action and bites on the fake. Mix in HB Dive and HB Lead Draw from the same set to keep linebacker flow guessing between quick hitters and the zone cutback look.
