Dagger out of Strong I Slot Flex is a classic vertical shot play designed to stress zone and man coverage with a two level clear out on one side. The yellow route runs a deep dig sitting behind the intermediate zones after a vertical stem clears out the corner and safety, while the red route from the same side runs a corner breaking route that occupies the outside defender and safety over the top. The blue route on the other side is a shallow crosser that gives a quick underneath option against soft coverage or as a checkdown when the dig is not open. Primary read progression starts with the deep dig, works to the corner route if the safety jumps the middle, and comes down to the shallow crosser as the outlet against pressure.
Read the middle linebacker depth at the snap, if he drops deep into the dig window immediately the offense will need to go to the corner route or the shallow crosser instead. Watch for a user controlled safety sitting in the deep middle third, that defender is the biggest threat to jumping the dig route and turning it into a pick six. Cover 2 with aggressive corners funneling receivers inside is the shell that shuts this down hardest since it clogs the dig lane and forces the quarterback to hold the ball. Cover 3 with a fast dropping curl to flat defender can undercut the shallow crosser if the quarterback tries to bail out too early. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge force a quick decision, so if you see man pressure alignment pre-snap key on the shallow crosser as the likely answer since the deep routes take too long to develop.
Use this on second and long or third and medium when you have time to let the dig develop against zone coverage. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties the dig should sit down in the void between the underneath zone and the deep half, if it is single high expect the corner route to be your primary answer since the safety will be occupied by the vertical clear out. Hot route the shallow crosser into a spot route if you are facing a blitz heavy defense so your quarterback has an immediate answer under five yards. Pair this play with Curl Flat and Double Slant from the same set so defenders have to respect quick game and cannot sit on the deep dig every snap. Against man coverage look to rifle the ball into the dig as soon as the receiver clears the second level, do not wait for full separation since the route design already creates the window.
