H Close Off

Overview

H Close Off takes the standard Strong I look and pulls the H back tight to the offensive line on the closed side, essentially creating a sixth blocker at the point of attack instead of a wide fullback offset. Where base Strong I sets align the lead back in a true strong side offset with two receivers split, H Close Off compresses the alignment: the H sits shoulder to shoulder with the tackle, the tailback stacks behind the quarterback, and the tight end works the same side as the H. That gives you a heavy closed side and a genuinely isolated single receiver on the open side, which is the entire point of the set.

The 21 personnel grouping (2 RB, 1 TE) forces the defense into base or heavy nickel, meaning you are usually looking at a linebacker or a bigger safety trying to handle your best route runner on the isolated side. X-Corner and WR Go's both attack that leverage directly, and because the closed side is stacked with blockers, defenses that want to keep numbers in the box are conceding that one on one. Conversely, if the opponent walks a safety down to help on the isolated X, you have HB Blunt Dive and HB Stretch to punish a light box behind a six man front.

Play action is where this set gets sneaky. PA Slide sells the same downhill run action as Blunt Dive with the H flowing across the formation, which pulls linebackers up and opens the intermediate window behind them. TE Option is the counter punch against man coverage: your tight end reads the defender's leverage and breaks away from it, which in Madden means a high percentage completion any time a linebacker draws the assignment. The Gadget tag means there is misdirection available here too, so this is not just a run heavy tell if you build the play sequence correctly.

Strengths

  • The isolated open side receiver in X-Corner is a true man beater against base personnel, especially when you motion nothing and let the defense declare its leverage pre-snap.
  • Six man closed side blocking surface makes HB Blunt Dive and HB Stretch viable against single high shells with a light box, and the H's tight alignment means faster kick out blocks on the edge.
  • PA Slide runs off the exact same initial read as the dive concept, so linebackers who bite on run action leave the intermediate crosser wide open against Cover 3 and Cover 4.
  • TE Option is one of the most reliable man coverage answers in the game since the route breaks off the defender's leverage automatically, making it a chain mover on third and medium.
  • WR Go's with a hot routed drag or flat underneath gives you a clean high low against Cover 2 without needing to motion or reset the formation.

Weaknesses

  • Compressed alignment means the defense can overload the closed side with a nano blitz off the edge and you have no natural width to spill the pressure outside.
  • Only one receiver on the open side gives a user controlled defender an easy assignment: sit on the X, take away the corner and go route, and your progression collapses.
  • 21 personnel is a run tell to experienced opponents who will drop into man under with a spy or robber sitting in the intermediate window PA Slide wants to attack.
  • HB Stretch struggles against six and seven man fronts with edge setters since the closed side congestion limits your cutback lanes.
  • Limited vertical spacing overall, so trailing late in the fourth this set does not give you the field stretchers you need to move quickly.

Usage Tips

Read the box count first: five or fewer defenders means run Blunt Dive or Stretch, six or more means take your isolated shot with X-Corner or WR Go's.

On third and short, TE Option against any look with a linebacker over your tight end is close to automatic, so check the pre-snap alignment before you audible away.

Sequence PA Slide only after you have shown Blunt Dive at least twice in the same drive, otherwise linebackers will not commit to the run action.

Hot route the H to a flat or angle route out of the closed side when you see man coverage, since the linebacker chasing him across the formation is a mismatch you can exploit repeatedly.

Use this set in the red zone from the eight yard line in: the compressed look makes the defense honor the run and X-Corner has just enough room to work the back shoulder against tight leverage.
