HB Stretch out of the Strong I H Close Off set is an outside zone run play with the offensive line and fullback flowing laterally to seal the edge before the HB decides to bounce, bang, or bend the run based on the block flow. The diagram shows the full offensive line stepping in unison toward the play side with the HB taking a lateral aiming point outside the tackle box, giving him a wide read to press the edge before cutting upfield. This is a pure run play, not a pass concept, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is patience: press the stretch, read the edge defender leverage, and cut off the first true seal from the playside blockers.
Watch defensive end and outside linebacker leverage at the snap: if they crash hard inside to beat blocks, bounce the run outside immediately for a big gain. Check for overloaded boxes with eight or more defenders in the box, which signals the defense expects a run and will require a quick, decisive cut rather than extra patience. Identify if the defense is running a scrape exchange or contain blitz off the edge, since a fast flowing linebacker or corner blitz can blow up the stretch before the seal forms. Look at safety depth pre-snap: a single high safety with the corner playing run support outside means the edge is not likely to hold, favoring the cutback lane. Post-snap, track the playside linebacker's pursuit angle. If he overruns the play chasing the stretch flow, cut it up through the vacated inside lane for the explosive gain.
Run this out of 21 personnel when you have a lead blocker fullback who can consistently win the edge against a 4-3 or 3-4 front, since the extra gap integrity matters against stacked boxes.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive line width to identify if the defense is in a wide 9-technique alignment, which makes the bounce read easier, or a tight shade that forces you to bend it back inside.
Pair HB Stretch with HB Blunt Dive from the same set to keep linebackers honest on downhill flow versus outside zone stretch, forcing them to hesitate on run fits.
Mix in TE Option or PA Slide off this same formation so defenses cannot key on personnel grouping alone and start cheating linebackers to the edge early.
Best called on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) when you want to stay ahead of the count and set up play-action shots later using the same Strong I look.
