X-Corner out of Strong I H Close Off (21 personnel) is a play-action style dropback pass built around a deep corner route from the X receiver combined with a crossing route underneath from the other outside receiver and a flat release from the TE (H) to the boundary. The FB runs a delayed release up the middle as a checkdown or scheme adjustment, giving the QB a layered read from deep to short. Primary read progression starts with the X-Corner attacking the deep outside third, works down to the crossing route working away from man coverage, and finishes with the FB check option if the top of the progression is covered, making this a solid man beater against single-high shells that also holds zone defenders with the vertical stretch.
Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: a single deep safety signals Cover 1 or Cover 3, both of which are vulnerable to the corner route beating the CB over the top. Watch the flat defender and slot defender depth, since a sitting linebacker in the crossing route's lane can jump the route and create a user pick-six opportunity. Post-snap, key the CB's hips: if he opens to the sideline immediately he is playing off-man or zone, which favors the underneath crossing route over the corner route. Two-high safety shells with a hard flat defender can take away both the corner route and the FB check, forcing the QB into a low-value crosser throw into a crowded underneath zone. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge attack the FB's release timing, so watch for a user rush off the corner or a nano blitz look that collapses the pocket before the corner route develops.
Look for single-high safety shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 pre-snap since the X-Corner route attacks the boundary defender's outside shoulder before the safety can rotate over.
Use motion or a hard count to bait the CB into jumping the corner route, then take advantage of the crossing route sitting in the vacated underneath zone.
Hot route the FB into a wider flat release against man coverage to create more separation on the checkdown if the linebacker is sitting tight in the box.
Pair this play with HB Stretch or HB Blunt Dive earlier in a series to get defenders keying run fits, then dial up X-Corner to punish overaggressive linebacker flow.
Best called on 2nd and medium to long or 1st down shots when you want to test a defense's willingness to play single-high against 21 personnel.
