Overview

Y Off Close takes the standard Strong I look and pulls the tight end off the line, tucking him tight to the tackle in an off-ball alignment rather than leaving him as a true attached blocker. That single adjustment changes the entire read structure. Instead of a heavy edge that defenses can set the front to, you get a hybrid alignment where the tight end can release clean without fighting through a defensive end, which is what makes the play-action and boot concepts in this set actually function. The fullback still sits in the strong offset position, so you keep the 21 personnel run identity and the extra body for lead blocking, but the passing menu is far wider than the base Strong I sets.

The alignment gives you a compressed formation with only two split receivers, which forces defenses into a decision. Play base personnel and stay heavy, and your tight end becomes an isolated matchup against a linebacker or safety on TE Option and SFT Mtn PA Y-Fork. Bring in nickel or dime to match the pass looks, and you are handing over favorable numbers for Counter Weak, HB Blast, and Zone Split Lead. The 3DRB and Power HB tags mean you can carry both a receiving back and a downhill runner through this set without tipping which one you plan to use, because the alignment looks identical either way.

Concept wise, the strength is the play-action package. PA Boot X Shot and PA Boot X Shot (1) get the quarterback moving off the run action with the tight end leaking across, PA Scissors gives you a true high low crossing pair against man, and SFT PA Double Cross builds in a shift before the snap that forces the defense to re-declare coverage. Mtn Flood is the zone beater of the set, flooding a side with three levels while the tight end works the intermediate. Add HB Stretch, Mtn Counter Solid, and HB Blunt Dive and you have gap, zone, and dive runs from one shell, which is exactly what makes this set difficult to key.

Strengths

  • Mtn Flood floods one side with three route levels and shreds Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops, especially when you hot route the fullback to a flat and give the quarterback a quick outlet under the deep clear.
  • The off-ball tight end releases clean without an edge defender jamming him, so TE Option and SFT Mtn PA Y-Fork isolate him on a linebacker in man coverage almost every snap.
  • PA Scissors and SFT PA Double Cross give you two dedicated man beaters with natural rub action, and the crossing pairs create traffic that Cover 1 defenders have to physically navigate.
  • Run diversity from one alignment is elite: Counter Weak and Mtn Counter Solid pull linemen, HB Blast and Zone Split Lead attack with the fullback, and HB Blunt Dive gets you a quick short yardage answer with zero pre-snap tell.
  • PA Boot X Shot and PA Boot X Shot (1) move the quarterback out of the pocket off run action, which neutralizes interior pressure and buys time against A gap heavy blitz looks.

Weaknesses

  • Only two split receivers means you cannot spread the field horizontally, so a user in the middle of the field can sit on the tight end and back routes and take away the entire short and intermediate menu.
  • The boot and play-action concepts have long developing route stems, and edge pressure to the side the quarterback rolls away from can catch him before the crossers clear.
  • Heavy nano blitz packages with double A gap looks force you into the dive or a hot route check because the fullback is often assigned to the play side rather than the pressure side.
  • Zone coverage users can cheat the flat and the seam simultaneously since your route distribution is condensed, and the boundary receiver frequently becomes a low percentage backshoulder throw.
  • Opponents who correctly read 21 personnel will keep base linebackers on the field, and if your tight end and fullback do not win their matchups you have no third receiving threat to fall back on.

Usage Tips

Establish HB Blast and Zone Split Lead early so the defense commits linebackers downhill, then run PA Boot X Shot and SFT Mtn PA Y-Fork off the same look for explosive play-action gains.

Read the safety alignment before the snap: single high means go to PA Scissors or SFT PA Double Cross as man beaters, two high means Mtn Flood to attack the vacated flat and hook zones.

Hot route the fullback to a flat or angle route as your pressure answer, since it converts a blocker into an immediate checkdown when you see double A gap or overloaded fronts.

In second and short or third and short, HB Blunt Dive and TE Option are your highest percentage calls because the compressed alignment does not tip which one is coming.

Use the shift built into SFT Mtn Zone Wk and SFT PA Double Cross to force the defense to re-declare coverage, then read whether the linebacker travels with the tight end to confirm man or zone.
