SFT Mtn Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Strong I with a pre-snap Y motion that shifts the fullback across the formation to adjust run strength and gain a numbers advantage at the point of attack. The offensive line flows weak with zone blocking, sealing gaps and climbing to linebackers while the fullback leads through the hole to pick off the first threat. The primary read is the frontside combo block: the running back presses the line, reads the fullback's kick out or seal, and cuts off the first daylight instead of forcing it into a stacked box.
Watch the fullback motion pre-snap and see if a linebacker or slot defender follows across the formation, which reveals man coverage principles even on a run look. Check safety depth before the snap, since a single high safety often means the box is loaded and a linebacker blitz or extra run fit defender is coming downhill. Post-snap, key the playside linebacker's first step, if he squats and reads the fullback instead of flowing hard, he is likely reading run fit and will fill the cutback lane quickly. Sitting a linebacker or safety in the weak side alley shuts this run down completely, since the cutback lane relies on that defender being pulled out of position by the motion. If the defense shows a heavy run blitz with edge defenders crashing hard, look for the cutback since the interior zone blocks will still get movement against a lighter box.
Use the Y motion pre-snap to identify if the defense shifts its front or has a linebacker chase across the formation, which tells you if you are facing man or a base zone front.
Run this out of early down and distance situations like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to keep the defense honest and set up play-action shots later in the set like PA Boot X Shot.
If the defense stacks the box with 8 or more defenders pre-snap, consider hot routing the fullback lead block angle or bailing into HB Blast for a more direct downhill run.
Pair this with Mtn PA Counter and SFT Mtn PA Y-Fork in the same play-calling sequence since the fullback motion look sets up defenders to bite on run fits that the pass concepts exploit.
Trust the zone blocking scheme and stay patient behind the line, letting the fullback's block develop before committing to a cutback lane.
