Zone Split Lead is an inside zone run out of Strong I with 21 personnel, showing a fullback leading through the hole while the offensive line steps in unison to the play side to seal running lanes. The diagram shows the HB taking a downhill angle behind the lead blocker with no route concepts attached since this is a pure ground play. Primary read progression is backside cutback to frontside gap to bounce outside, letting the HB press the line and read the fullback's block before deciding on the lane.
Defensive Reads
Key the fullback's block first since his path tells you which gap the offense intends to hit and where the cutback lane will open. Watch for a stacked box with the Mike linebacker showing blitz, this alignment often signals a run blitz designed to beat inside zone before the double team sets. Identify safety rotation pre-snap: if both safeties stay deep in a two high shell, the box is lighter and this run scheme should find running room easily. If the defense shows an eight man front with the strong safety creeping down near the line, this play struggles because the extra defender fills the frontside gap before the lead blocker can climb. User the Mike linebacker manually and key the fullback's release to close the natural running lane before the HB gets to the second level.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage to keep defenses honest against your play-action shots in this set. Check the linebacker depth pre-snap: if the Mike and Will are stacked tight to the line, expect fill blitzes and be ready to bounce the run outside off the fullback's lead block. Use inside zone to set up PA Boot X Shot and Mtn PA Counter later in the series since both plays sell run action from the same Strong I look. Against light boxes with only six defenders in the box, trust the interior double teams and stick with the frontside read rather than forcing a cutback. Mix in HB Blast and HB Blunt Dive from the same personnel to keep the defense guessing on downhill run direction while still leaning on the fullback lead concept.
