Breakdown

SFT PA Double Cross is a play-action pass out of Strong I with Y Off Close, using 21 personnel to sell the run fake before attacking downfield. Off the play fake, two receivers cross paths over the middle running deep crossing routes in opposite directions, creating natural rub action against man coverage, while a third route works a shallow drag underneath and the backfield outlet runs a check release into the flat. The primary read progression starts with the deep crosser breaking toward the strong side, moves to the opposite crosser sitting behind it, and works down to the underneath drag and flat route if both crossers are covered.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability here since the crossing routes are designed to create separation through natural traffic. Watch for a lurking linebacker or safety sitting in the shallow middle zone, since that defender can jump the underneath drag or the first crosser if he reads play action quickly. Cover 3 and other single high shells with underneath zone droppers can clog the crossing lanes, so identify the middle linebacker's depth pre-snap and see if he sinks into the crossing routes after the snap. A hard edge blitz or contain rush can disrupt the play-action fake and collapse the pocket before the deep crossers develop, so check for stacked defensive ends or an overload front before the snap. If the defense shows two high safeties rotating down fast into the underneath zones post-snap, expect the crossers to be taken away and be ready to check down to the flat route instead.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs in the set (first or second and short to medium) so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties in the box.

Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, expect zone drops underneath and target the crossers as they clear the linebacker level.

Against man coverage, trust the natural rub created by the two crossers colliding near the middle of the field and take the first open crosser rather than forcing the deeper route.

Use hot routes to convert the flat route into a quick out if you see the corner sitting on the shallow drag, giving you a built-in answer versus aggressive underneath jump coverage.

Pair this play with HB Blast or HB Blunt Dive earlier in a drive to get defenders keying run fits, then come back to SFT PA Double Cross once the linebackers start creeping up to sell the same Strong I run action.
