HB Stretch out of Strong I Y Off Close is a zone run play that sends the offensive line flowing laterally toward the play side to stretch the defensive front horizontally before the HB presses the edge and picks his cut. The diagram shows the fullback and TE aligned tight for kickout and reach blocks while the HB takes the handoff and works toward the sideline, reading the frontside blocks to decide between bouncing outside or cutting up into a vertical crease. The primary read progression is frontside to backside: the HB reads the play side edge defender and the flow of the offensive line first, and if the edge is sealed and the alley is clogged, he presses further to look for a cutback lane against overpursuing linebackers.
Pre-snap, identify the strength of the defensive front and check whether the defense has shifted a linebacker to match the Strong I personnel, since an unbalanced front can overload the play side and kill the stretch. Watch safety depth and rotation before the snap: single high safeties often signal man or Cover 3 run support that can be slow to fill the alley, while two high shells suggest lighter boxes that are easier to stretch horizontally. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker. If they stay square and squeeze down the line without getting reached, the HB should not bounce and instead look for the cutback. User-controlled defenders flying downhill from a linebacker spot are the biggest threat to this play, so scout for aggressive user blitzers pre-snap and consider audibling to a quick pass if you see a corner or safety walked into the box. A fast scraping Mike linebacker who reads zone flow instantly can wash the play down from behind, so if you see this look consistently, mix in Counter Weak or HB Blunt Dive to keep the defense honest.
Use HB Stretch on early downs (first and ten, second and short) when you want to set up run/pass balance out of Strong I personnel.
Pre-snap, check the defensive front for a shaded nose or 4i technique on the play side since that alignment can beat the reach block and blow up the stretch before it develops.
If the defense shows a heavy box with 8 or more defenders, hot route the FB or TE to a chip and release, or check out to a play-action pass in this set like PA Boot X Shot to punish the aggressive run fit.
Combine HB Stretch with Counter Weak in your play-calling sequence so linebackers who key the stretch flow get gashed by the counter action going the opposite direction.
Against fast flow linebackers who fly to the sideline, coach the HB to plant early and cut back through the vacated B-gap rather than forcing the edge every time.
