Z Close takes the standard Strong I look and pulls the flanker in tight to the formation, creating a condensed three man surface on the strong side with the tight end, the Z receiver, and the fullback offset behind the guard. Where base Strong I sets spread the Z out wide and force the defense to declare its coverage rotation early, Z Close hides that receiver inside the numbers where he functions as a de facto second tight end on run downs and a free releaser against zone on pass downs. The 21 personnel grouping (2 RB, 1 TE) keeps heavy bodies on the field, which means most opponents answer with base or run heavy nickel, and that is exactly the personnel mismatch you want when the Z is a legitimate receiving threat lined up next to a linebacker or an in the box safety.
The run game out of this set is built on downhill volume: HB Dive and 26 Duo Alert X Lookie attack the strong side A and B gaps behind the fullback, Counter Weak pulls back against the flow you just established, and HB Stretch takes advantage of the extra strong side surface to widen the front before you bounce it. The Gadget tag comes from End Around and Fake End Around, which use the closed Z alignment to get the receiver moving across the formation on a short path rather than the long, easily diagnosed sweep motion you see from wide splits. That short path is the whole point: the ball arrives faster and user defenders have less time to read the handoff.
Where Z Close really separates itself is the play action package. PA Post Dig, PA Cross, PA WR In, PA Sail, PA Power O, PA Slide, and PA Sprint HB Flat all sell the same downhill run action you have been hammering, and the condensed Z alignment gives you inside leverage on every one of those in breaking routes before the corner can even establish contact. Add Flanker Drive and Slant Spacing as your quick game answers and you have a set that punishes both heavy man coverage (the closed Z creates natural rubs) and soft zone (the Dig and Cross concepts flood the intermediate hook and curl windows).
Establish the interior run game first with HB Dive and 26 Duo Alert X Lookie before you touch the play action package, because every PA concept here depends on linebackers biting on downhill run action.
Read the alignment over your closed Z pre snap: if a linebacker or safety is stacked over him with no help, hot route him vertical or on an in cut and take the isolated matchup, and if a corner walks down in press, look to Flanker Drive for the rub.
Use PA Power O and PA Sprint HB Flat against aggressive user blitzers, since the run action plus rollout gets you outside the pressure and gives you an immediate flat and sail progression on the move.
Save End Around for after you have shown HB Stretch and Counter Weak multiple times, then use Fake End Around on the very next drive when the opponent starts chasing the receiver motion with a user defender.
In short yardage and goal line situations this set is at its best: keep 21 personnel on the field, run Duo or Dive twice, then hit PA WR In or Slant Spacing with your tight end and Z working the same condensed side.
