26 Duo Alert X Lookie

Breakdown

26 Duo Alert X Lookie is a Duo run concept out of Strong I with an alert tag that sends the X receiver on a quick lookie (hitch) route while the flanker runs a deep clear out route up the sideline. The Duo blocking scheme uses double teams at the point of attack that climb to the second level, designed to get vertical push on the interior defensive line and let the HB press the hole before cutting off linebacker flow. Since this is a run play, the routes on the diagram are alert reads for a potential audible or pass check rather than the primary action, and the actual read progression starts with the fullback and offensive line double teams up front, then the HB reading the Mike linebacker's fit before deciding to hit it downhill or bounce.

Defensive Reads

Key the Mike linebacker's initial step at the snap, if he flows hard to one gap the HB should be coached to cut back against the grain on the double team side. Watch the defensive line technique before the snap, a shaded nose tackle or 3-technique can clog the double team gap and force the run outside quicker than designed. If the defense shows a single high safety with the corners pressed on the outside receivers, this is a run funnel look that Duo blocking is built to attack downhill. Look for linebackers cheating up into the box pre-snap, which signals run blitz recognition and should trigger the alert check to the X Lookie hitch for a quick, safe completion. Post-snap, identify any user-controlled defender flying downhill into the A or B gap, since that is the biggest threat to blow up the double team before it can climb to the second level.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, when you want to establish the Duo run game and keep defenses honest against heavy Strong I personnel.

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box against 21 personnel, consider checking to the X Lookie route as a built in alert against overloaded fronts.

Watch for safety rotation before the snap, if both safeties stay deep it usually signals two high shells that are more vulnerable to Duo runs since there is one less run defender in the box.

Pair this play with PA Power O and PA Sail in your play-calling sequence since both use similar Strong I formation and run action, forcing linebackers to respect the run fake and opening up play-action throws later in the series.

Mix in Counter Weak from the same set to keep the defense guessing on gap direction, since both plays start with similar backfield action but attack different edges.
