Flanker Drive out of Strong I Z Close (21 personnel) shows a drive concept combined with a deep post and a flat/wheel combo. The X receiver runs a deep post from the backside, the Z runs a drive route working underneath from outside in and settling across the field, the TE runs a corner route breaking outside off the numbers, and the fullback releases into the flat before wheeling up the sideline. The backside RB checks release and runs an outlet drag underneath the drive route while the offensive line slides protection. This is a play-action-free dropback pass built as a Cover 4 beater, with the primary read progression starting on the deep post against a two-high shell, working down to the drive route in the intermediate zone, and finishing with the wheel or flat as the checkdown against man coverage or blitz pressure.
Presnap, check safety depth and width, if both safeties are deep and evenly spaced in a true Cover 4 shell the post will threaten the seam between them immediately at the snap. Watch the flanker's drive route as your first alert, if a linebacker sinks into the shallow zone quickly and the underneath drop is disciplined the drive will get taken away and force the quarterback to hold the ball. Corner positioning on the X side matters, if the cornerback presses or plays outside leverage the post has an easier throwing lane, so bail technique corners with inside help shut this down faster. Post-snap, key any user-controlled defender sitting as a lurk in the middle of the field, since that defender can jump the drive route or undercut the post if the quarterback stares it down. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge attack this play's protection before the deep routes develop, so an overload blitz or contain-and-spy pressure package is one of the fastest ways to shut it down.
Use this against two-high safety shells since it is tagged as a Cover 4 beater and the deep post from the X will split the safeties if they stay flat-footed.
Read the flow of the linebackers presnap, if they widen with the fullback's flat release the drive route from the Z will sit in the vacated middle window.
Hot route the backside RB into a hook or flat if you diagnose man coverage, since the drive concept naturally clears space for a late-arriving checkdown.
Pair this with PA Post Dig or PA Sail from the same Z Close set to keep linebackers honest on their run fits while still attacking the same post and drive route zones.
Best called on second and medium or first and ten when defenses are more likely to sit in a base two-high shell rather than roll into man pressure.
