Breakdown

PA Sail out of Strong I Z Close is a play-action pass built off the classic sail concept, stretching the field horizontally and vertically on one side while a backside receiver works a dig-crosser into the void. The play fakes the HB run to hold the linebackers and safeties, then releases the TE on a corner route up top, the flanker on an out-and-under flat route beneath it, and the backside X running a deep crossing route into the opposite hash. Primary progression starts with the corner route (TE) attacking the deep third or Cover 2 hole, works down to the flat route as the underneath zone beater, and comes back to the crosser as the man beater outlet against man coverage or blitz.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is in a two high shell or single high shell since that determines which route to prioritize in your progression. Watch the cornerback over the TE side: if he sinks with depth on the snap that signals Cover 2 or Cover 3, opening the flat route as the quick answer. Key the flat defender (corner or linebacker): if he widens to cover the flat immediately, the corner route behind him becomes the higher percentage throw. Post-snap, scan for a user-controlled defender sitting in the intermediate zone or lurking near the sail concept, since a smart user will jump the flat or corner route and bait the crosser instead. Beware of Cover 3 buzz or Cover 4 shells with safeties rotating hard to the sail side, as this can clog both the corner and flat routes and force the checkdown to the backside crosser. This play struggles against disciplined zone drops with linebackers sitting at the sticks, so if you see linebackers reading run-pass keys well, expect the window over the middle to shrink fast.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs or in play-action counts where the defense expects run based on Strong I personnel and prior HB Dive or Counter Weak calls.

Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting at depth, target the flat route underneath the corner since Cover 2 corners will sink and open the flat area.

Against single high looks or Cover 3, prioritize the corner route since it stretches the deep third defender and creates a natural window between the flat defender and deep safety.

If the defense shows man coverage or you see a linebacker walked up threatening the edge, get to your crosser fast since it is the built-in man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 0 pressure.

Sequence this with HB Dive and Counter Weak earlier in a drive to sell the run fake, then hit PA Sail once the defense starts crashing linebackers downhill on run action.
