Slant Spacing out of Strong I Z Close (21 personnel) puts a receiver on a deep slant to the outside while the other side runs a spacing concept with a flat route and a stick/curl sitting underneath. The backfield releases into the pattern to fill the shallow spacing zone, creating a five-underneath spread that stretches zone defenders horizontally while the slant attacks vertically behind them. This is a classic zone beater built to exploit Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells, with the primary read starting on the slant route against man coverage and working down to the spacing concept if the underneath zone is sitting soft.
Watch the corner aligned over the slant receiver pre-snap, if he is playing tight man or squatting in a hard outside zone the slant throw is at risk of getting jumped. Key the flow of the middle linebacker after the snap, a fast triggering Mike sinking into the spacing zone can take away the stick and flat combo underneath. Look for a user controlled defender lurking in the shallow zone, since spacing concepts are vulnerable to a spot dropper who reads the quarterback's eyes and jumps the flat or stick route. Cover 4 shells with the safety rotating late can disguise the deep quarter and close the window on the slant, so watch for late safety rotation pre-snap. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can collapse the pocket before the slant develops, so identify overload blitz looks and be ready to throw the spacing concept quickly.
Pre-snap, check if the corner over the slant is playing outside leverage or sitting in a zone drop, since the slant wins instantly against off man or Cover 3 corners playing outside contain.
Identify the Cover 3 or Cover 4 shell by watching the strong safety depth, if he is sitting flat footed near the hash the spacing concept underneath will have room to work before he can flow over.
Use the flat and stick combination on the spacing side as your check down if the slant is blanketed by a robber or cloud corner rolling down.
This play hits best on early down and medium distance situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base zone shells rather than blitz.
Pair this play with PA Sail or PA Post Dig from the same set to keep defenders honest on the slant window, then come back to Slant Spacing once the defense starts jumping the shallow routes.
