Close Flex

Overview

Close Flex takes the Strong I backfield (fullback offset to the strong side, halfback stacked behind the quarterback) and pulls both outside receivers down into tight, condensed splits while flexing the tight end off the line. Where base Strong I sets keep receivers on the numbers and force the defense to defend the full width of the field, Close Flex compresses everything inside the hashes. That alignment change matters in Madden because it shortens every crossing route, tightens the release windows for man coverage defenders, and creates natural rub and traffic situations without you having to motion anybody. Out of 21 personnel, you are showing a two back heavy look that reads as run first, which is exactly the pre-snap picture you want before running Mills or Drive.

The condensed splits are what make this set different from the rest of the formation. Mills becomes a legitimate Cover 4 and Cover 2 killer here because the dig route from a tight split gets on top of the safety faster, and the post behind it works into vacated space before the deep half defender can recover. Drive gives you a shallow crosser with immediate traffic from the compressed side, which is one of the cleanest man beaters in the game when the defense checks into Cover 1 against 21 personnel. Because the formation looks like a downhill run set, most opponents will drop a safety or bring a linebacker to the box, and that leaves your flexed tight end running seams and digs against a linebacker or a strong safety instead of a corner.

The run game is where this set earns its keep. FB Dive, Counter Weak, and HB Stretch all come out of the same look, and the tight splits mean your outside receivers are actually in position to crack block and seal defenders on the perimeter runs. PA Lead Draw Shot and PA Boot Slide punish opponents who start committing linebackers downhill, and HB Slip Screen and PA Sprint HB Flat get your Power HB or 3DRB the ball in space once the defense starts crowding the box. This is a true play action package: the run plays sell the pass plays and the pass plays sell the run plays, all from an identical alignment.

Strengths

  • Mills is one of the best Cover 4 and Cover 2 beaters in the game, and the compressed split shortens the dig so the post opens up faster against the deep half or quarter defender.
  • Drive with the shallow crosser and the dig behind it shreds Cover 1 and man blitz looks because the tight splits create natural traffic without needing a motion or a stack.
  • 21 personnel forces most opponents to keep a base defense or bring a safety into the box, which leaves your flexed tight end matched on a linebacker on seams and hot routed corners.
  • PA Lead Draw Shot and PA Boot Slide give you two different play action shells off the same run action, so you can attack aggressive user linebackers who commit downhill on FB Dive and Counter Weak.
  • The run game menu is complete: FB Dive for interior power, Counter Weak for backside pulls, and HB Stretch for horizontal displacement, all from an identical pre-snap look.

Weaknesses

  • Only two receivers plus a flexed tight end means you have limited answers against Cover 3 Match and heavy zone drops, and there are no true four verticals or spread reads available in this set.
  • Compressed splits pull all of your route distribution into the middle of the field, so a user controlled middle linebacker or free safety sitting at ten to twelve yards can sit on Mills and Drive.
  • Edge pressure and A gap blitzes get home fast because the fullback is often assigned to lead or fake rather than protect, and the halfback release on PA concepts leaves you thin in protection.
  • Because the formation screams run, savvy opponents will play press man with a robber and dare you to throw, which stalls the shallow and dig combos before they develop.
  • HB Slip Screen and PA Sprint HB Flat become predictable if you lean on them, and a user defender crashing the flat can turn either one into a negative play or a turnover.

Usage Tips

Read the safety count pre-snap: two high with soft corners means Mills, single high or man indicators mean Drive, and a loaded box with eight defenders means PA Lead Draw Shot or PA Boot Slide.

Establish FB Dive and Counter Weak on first and second down before you go to the play action shots, because every PA concept in this set depends on the linebackers biting on the run fake.

Hot route the flexed tight end to a seam or corner when you see the strong safety walked down into the box, since that is your cleanest one on one against a linebacker or a safety in trail technique.

Use HB Slip Screen on third and medium against opponents who blitz off the edge, and check the flat defender pre-snap so you know which side has the numbers advantage.

Motion one of the condensed receivers across the formation to identify man versus zone, then flip to HB Stretch away from the extra defender or back to Drive if the defense stays zone.
