HB Stretch out of Strong I Close Flex is an outside zone run play that sends the offensive line and the fullback flowing laterally toward the play side, giving the HB a stretch aiming point outside the tackle box. The diagram shows the two wide receivers running vertical releases to occupy the deep coverage while the TE and inline blockers work the edge, creating a run lane the back can bend backside off a cutback if the frontside gets sealed. This is a pure zone run play designed to outrun the defensive front and force linebackers to flow before the ball cuts, not a play-action or RPO look.
Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker first, if they widen too far to contain the stretch you can user your fullback lead block through the alley for a big cutback gain. Watch for a hard crashing three technique or nine technique, since aggressive gap shooters can blow up the frontside zone before the back sets his track. Look at safety depth before the snap, an eight man front or safety cheating into the box signals a run blitz that overloads the stretch side and should trigger a bounce or cutback read. Post-snap, track the middle linebacker's flow speed, a slow reading MLB gives the back a clean cutback lane, while a fast flowing MLB who beats the zone can shut this down completely. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra flow support is where this play thrives, but heavy zone blitz packages that crash multiple gaps on the play side tendency will consistently stop HB Stretch for minimal gain.
Run this out of Strong I Close Flex when you see light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the fullback lead blocker and zone flow need numbers advantage to seal the edge. Check the alignment of the strong side linebacker and defensive end pre-snap, if they are crashing hard inside you have a natural bounce lane outside. Use your hot route to bump a receiver into a stalk block on a slot corner if the defense shows a rolled up coverage shell near the line of scrimmage. Sequence this with Counter Weak from the same Close Flex set so the defense has to respect both frontside stretch flow and backside counter action off identical formation and personnel looks. Best called on early downs in normal or short yardage situations where defenses are not selling out with extra DBs, and pair it with PA Boot Slide later in a series to punish linebackers who bite hard on the stretch flow fake.
