Counter Weak out of Strong I Close Flex (21 personnel) pulls the backside guard and fullback to the weak side, kicking out the edge defender while the HB takes a counter step before cutting up through the lane created by the pulling linemen. The offensive line blocks down and away from the play call, sealing the strong side to sell the flow one way before the HB cuts back weak, and the FB leads through the hole as a lead blocker. This is a power run design built to attack overaggressive run flow and gap-shooting defenses, not a play-action or screen concept. Primary read progression is patience on the counter step, reading the pulling guard and FB for the kick out and lead block, then finding the cutback lane once the misdirection opens the weak side.
Pre-snap, key the weak side linebacker depth and alignment, since Counter Weak is designed to attack light boxes or defenders who crash hard toward the initial strong side flow. Watch for a Mike or Will linebacker who reads the pulling guard quickly and flows over the top, since disciplined linebackers who stay home in their gap can blow this play up before the kick out block develops. Look for edge defenders who crash inside on run flow reads, since the kick out block from the FB or pulling lineman is designed to seal them and create the cutback lane. On the user side, mirror the HB counter step with your user linebacker or safety instead of committing to the initial flow, since jumping the strong side action too early leaves the cutback lane wide open. This play struggles against gap-sound fronts and disciplined 4-3 or 34 fronts that stay square and read the pulling linemen, so heavy blitz packages that shoot gaps immediately can also disrupt the timing before the counter action develops.
Run this out of Strong I Close Flex when the defense shows aggressive downhill linebacker flow or overpursuit tendencies on tape, since Counter Weak thrives against defenders who bite on the initial strong side flow. Use manual motion or the HB counter step patiently before committing to the hole, since defenders keying too fast will hurt your cutback ability if you rush it. Pair this with FB Dive and HB Stretch from the same set to keep defenders honest, since all three plays start with similar strong side action before diverging. Call Counter Weak on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay on schedule and set up PA Lead Draw Shot later once the defense starts keying run flow. Watch for stacked boxes with 8 or more defenders, since Counter Weak can still hit if the backside pursuit overruns the counter action, but it becomes riskier against disciplined gap defenders.
