Breakdown

PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action sprint out concept from the Strong I Close Flex set that pulls the quarterback to the boot side while attacking the flat and intermediate sideline. Off the run fake, the FB releases to the flat as an underneath outlet while the two receivers from the bunch run a vertical seam and a corner-breaking out route stacked behind it, giving the quarterback a high-low read on that side. The blue route on the backside is a simple flat or out breaker that serves as a checkdown away from the boot action, and the play is designed to be a man beater when the flat defender bites on the run fake, though it also stresses zone defenders who have to sink and wall the sideline.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strong safety and outside corner alignment on the boot side since a two-high shell with soft corners invites the QB to sit and read the high-low route combo. Watch the flat defender's depth before the snap: if a linebacker is sitting shallow expecting the FB release, jump the route immediately with a user defender to bait a checkdown throw into a mismatch. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's pursuit angle on the run fake, since disciplined linebackers who stay home on the play-action can undercut the seam route and force the quarterback into the flat check-down. Man coverage without safety help over the top is the biggest vulnerability, as the corner route can separate quickly on breaks. Sim pressure or a contain-and-spy call on the sprint side takes away the boot lane and forces a rushed or inaccurate throw, so aggressive edge defenders who stay disciplined against the fake are the best counter.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or second and short when defenses respect the Strong I run look and bite on the play-action. Check the flat defender pre-snap: if he is a linebacker with run responsibility, the FB flat route will come open almost immediately after the boot. Use the deep out route as your first read against man coverage since the receiver has leverage after the break, then work down to the flat route if the corner sits underneath. Pair this play with Counter Weak and FB Dive earlier in a series so the defense keys run action and starts flowing hard, which sets up the sprint boot fake to hit for a bigger explosive gain. Avoid calling this into aggressive blitz-heavy defenses unless you release the QB quickly, since the sprint out mechanic limits your ability to reset in the pocket.
