Breakdown

Mills out of the Strong I Close Flex set is a classic Cover 4 beater built around a post/dig combo on the backside. The X receiver runs a deep post while the TE or slot runs an underneath dig sitting behind the linebackers, and a third receiver clears out on a deep vertical to hold the corner and safety on that side. Underneath, the FB or HB releases into a flat/shallow crossing route to occupy the linebackers and give the quarterback a checkdown, while the offensive line sets up in standard drop back protection. The primary read starts with the deep post, then works down to the dig, and finishes at the flat route if the safety squats on the post.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are aligned in a two-high shell, since that tips Cover 4 or Cover 2 and signals the post/dig combo should work. If you see a single high safety rotate late, expect Cover 3 or Cover 1, which puts more pressure on the post to win one on one against a deep third defender. Watch the underneath linebackers at the snap, since a fast flow to the flat route can jump the checkdown and bait a turnover if the quarterback locks on late. Man coverage with press corners on the outside receivers is the biggest counter to this play, since it disrupts the timing of the post before it stems inward. A lurking user-controlled defender sitting in the middle of the field can undercut the dig route, so quarterbacks need to read the depth of that defender before committing to the second progression.

Usage Tips

Look for two-high safety shells pre-snap since the post/dig combo is designed to exploit the seam between Cover 4 quarters defenders.

If the safety cheats over the top of the post, work the dig route immediately since it should be sitting in the vacated middle void.

Use motion or a hot route on the flat route to adjust against man coverage if you see a corner shaded outside the numbers pre-snap.

Pair this play with PA Lead Draw Shot in your call sheet since both use similar backfield action, forcing linebackers to freeze and open passing lanes for the post and dig.

Best called on second and long or early down situations where you have time to let the deep post and dig develop against a drop back rush.
