H Wing

Overview

H Wing is the heaviest and most compressed look in Strong I, pairing 22 personnel (two backs, two tight ends) with a wing tight end aligned just off the tackle's outside hip on the strong side. Where base Strong I sets stack the fullback and halfback behind center with a conventional split end and flanker, H Wing pulls that second tight end down tight and off the line as a wing, creating an extra gap at the point of attack and a natural arc release into the flat. That alignment is why the set carries the Gadget tag: the wing can motion across, insert as a lead blocker, leak out on PA Sprint HB Flat, or run the F Trail concept underneath while the defense is still counting bodies in the box.

The run game is the identity here. Power O and PA Power O give you the pulling guard and kickout combination that H Wing was built for, while HB Duo, HB Dive, Inside Zone Wk, Zone Wk, and HB Cntr Wk cover the full downhill menu: double teams up to the second level, one-back interior tempo, and weak side counter action that punishes over-rotated fronts. With two backs and two tight ends on the field, defenses are forced into base or nickel, and any attempt to walk a safety down to match the extra gap opens single high or true Cover 1 behind it.

That is where the pass concepts matter. Fade and X Slant isolate the backside split end against whatever corner is left on an island with no safety help over the top, which is the cleanest matchup advantage this set produces. Curls and F Trail attack the intermediate zones off run action, and PA Sprint HB Flat moves the pocket away from the wing side so your quarterback gets a clean half field read with a flat, a drag, and a deep shot. The formation sells run on every snap, which is exactly what makes the play action inventory here so profitable.

Strengths

  • Elite run formation with Power O, HB Duo, HB Cntr Wk, and Inside Zone Wk covering gap, zone, and counter schemes out of the same look, so run fits are never predictable
  • Forces base or nickel personnel from the defense, which gives you linebackers in coverage on Curls and F Trail underneath and creates the mismatch you want against any zone shell
  • Fade and X Slant isolate the backside X receiver one on one, and against single high the fade is a pure man beater with no cap over the top
  • PA Power O and PA Sprint HB Flat are lethal off an established run identity, freezing linebackers and opening the flat and intermediate crossers with defenders out of position
  • The wing tight end is a motion weapon: send him across pre-snap to diagnose man or zone, add a gap to the weak side, or hot route him to a flat or drag against a blitz look

Weaknesses

  • Only two receiving threats release on most concepts, so disciplined zone coverage with a user defender in the middle can shrink the field quickly on obvious passing downs
  • Heavy personnel telegraphs run tendency, and good opponents will load the box, run single high, and dare you to beat them with the Fade or X Slant in one on one coverage
  • Interior nano blitzes and A gap pressure force the fullback into isolated pickup situations, and the play action concepts hold the quarterback in the pocket too long against edge overloads
  • No true four verticals or spread answer, so trailing late in the game with the clock running this set becomes a liability and forces you out of your base playbook
  • A user-controlled safety cheating to the isolated split end takes away your best matchup and leaves you with only short underneath throws

Usage Tips

Live in this set on first and second down between the 20s to build a run identity, then cash in with PA Power O and PA Sprint HB Flat on the exact same down and distance you have been pounding the rock

Read the safety shell pre-snap: single high with a walked down defender means call Fade or X Slant to the isolated side, two high means hammer HB Duo or Power O into the lighter box

Motion the wing tight end across before the snap to confirm man or zone, then adjust your call, if a defender follows him you have man and the Fade and X Slant become priority reads

Hot route the fullback to a flat or block based on the pressure look, keeping him in against A gap heavy fronts and releasing him against four man rushes to add a checkdown outlet

Use HB Cntr Wk and Zone Wk when the defense starts over-flowing to the strong side wing, the weak side counter action punishes aggressive linebacker triggers and slow flowing user defenders

Inside the five yard line, Fade and Power O give you the classic two call package, run it until the defense commits an extra body then throw the back shoulder ball
