Zone Wk out of Strong I H Wing is a weak side zone run that pulls the play side flow away from the strength of the formation, using the H Wing as an extra blocker or lead man at the point of attack. The offensive line executes zone steps in unison, working combo blocks at the line before climbing to the second level, while the fullback and H Wing seal off backside pursuit. The primary read progression for the HB is to press the weak side hole, read the play side double team and the H Wing kick or seal block, then decide between the bend cut inside the tackle or the bounce outside if the edge is soft.
Check the linebacker alignment before the snap, a heavy shade to the strong side signals a soft weak side edge for the bounce Watch the defensive end and outside linebacker on the weak side, if they crash hard down the line the cutback lane opens behind them Identify if the defense is running a run blitz or gap exchange scheme, this can beat zone steps if the H Wing whiffs on the kick block Zone Wk struggles against a stacked 4-3 under front or a defense selling out with extra defenders in the box on early downs Watch for a user controlled linebacker sitting in the cutback lane, this is the most common way defenses shut down the backside read
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the linebacker depth to confirm the weak side is not overloaded before the snap
Attack odd fronts and light boxes since this play thrives when the defense stacks numbers to the strong side
Pair Zone Wk with Power O and HB Cntr Wk from the same set to keep the defense guessing on strong versus weak side run direction
If you see a 6 or 7 man box, check to Curls or X Slant to punish an overcommitted run defense
User the fullback or H Wing block manually against a run blitzing linebacker to secure the edge on the bounce read
Run this on early downs in normal or base personnel looks to stay ahead of the sticks and set up later play-action shots off the same look
