PA Sprint HB Flat is a play-action rollout out of the Strong I H Wing set designed to freeze linebackers with the run fake before rolling the quarterback toward the strength of the formation. The concept typically features a flat route from the H Wing or fullback area combined with an intermediate crosser and a deep shot down the sideline, giving the quarterback a boot action with easy access to the flat if the defense bites on the run. This is a play-action man and zone beater built for movement passing, with the primary read progression going flat route first as an outlet, then to the crossing route working underneath zone drops, with the deep route as a shot play if the safety bites on the play fake.
Check safety depth before the snap, if both safeties are deep it signals two high shell and the flat and short crossing routes become your primary targets since the deep route will be taken away. Watch the flat defender at the snap, aggressive linebackers who bite hard on the run fake open up easy completions to the flat and crosser. Identify Cover 3 by reading the flat defender sinking into a deep third instead of covering the flat, this leaves a natural window for the flat route. Man coverage shells with the corner pressed on the wing receiver get exposed by the flat route breaking outside quickly against inside leverage. Watch for a user linebacker spying or lurking in the shallow crossing lane, since this play struggles against a disciplined defender who ignores the run fake and sits on the intermediate crosser.
Run this out of base personnel early in a series to sell the Power O and HB Dive tendencies already established from this same H Wing formation so linebackers respect the run fake.
Use it on early downs like first and second and ten when defenses are more likely to play run support with linebackers stepping up.
Check the flat defender pre snap, if a corner or linebacker is sitting low in the flat zone, hot route the flat route to a shallow drag or speed out to clear that defender.
Pair this call with Power O and PA Power O in the same series so the defense cannot key on run versus pass based on formation alone.
If you see two deep safeties, prioritize the flat and crossing routes since the deep shot will be covered, and roll the pocket away from pressure using the sprint action.
