HB Dive

Breakdown

HB Dive out of the Strong I H Wing formation is a downhill inside run play designed to attack the A gaps with a straight north-south dive scheme. The offensive line fires off the ball with a base blocking scheme, the fullback leads into the hole to seal the first linebacker to show, and the H Wing tight end cracks down on the strong side edge to prevent flow from the outside in. This is not a man or zone beater in the passing game sense, it is a numbers and gap integrity run play, and the primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the initial A gap crease first, then bounce to the play side B gap if the fullback's block gets pushed off the line.

Defensive Reads

Identify the middle linebacker depth before the snap, if he is sitting shallow at five yards or less he is likely keying run and will shoot the gap immediately, so be ready to bounce outside. Watch for a stacked box with eight defenders near the line, this is the look that kills HB Dive since there is no numbers advantage for the offensive line to work with. Check safety alignment, a single high safety shell with the strong safety creeping into the box signals run support is loaded on the strong side, favoring a cutback to the backside A gap. Post snap, track whether the defense fires a nano blitz through the A gap, if the user controlled defender crashes immediately off the snap the fullback lead block becomes critical to seal that first threat. Cover 3 or Cover 1 with man coverage on the perimeter tends to leave light boxes ideal for this run, while any defense showing Cover 2 with two deep safeties and heavy run blitz packages will clog the interior and shut this play down.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against your Strong I personnel.

Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more defenders stacked inside the tackles this play loses its numbers advantage and you should audible to Power O or PA Power O instead.

Use HB Dive as a tempo changer after showing PA Sprint HB Flat or PA Power O from the same formation, since defenses that started keying run fits to stop the dive become vulnerable to the play action shots off identical presnap looks.

Against defenses that load the box with a linebacker walked up over the fullback, hot route the fullback to a quick chip and let the dive naturally bend to the backside cutback lane.

Pair this with HB Cntr Wk and Inside Zone Wk in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on one blocking scheme, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits every snap.
