HB Duo out of Strong I H Wing is a downhill gap run play built to create double team blocks at the point of attack before working up to the second level. The offensive line combo blocks the defensive tackles and drives them off the ball while the fullback and H Wing block the play side linebacker, allowing the running back to press the hole and read the alley for a cutback lane. This is a run play designed to beat light boxes and predictable run fits, and the primary read progression starts with the fullback lead block, then bounces outside if the double team gets stonewalled at the line.
Read the linebacker depth before the snap, since linebackers sitting at five yards or deeper give the double team more time to climb and open the cutback lane. Watch for a stacked box with the strong safety creeping down near the line, which signals a run blitz or extra gap defender that can blow up Duo before the double team gets set. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 under or over front, since shaded defensive tackles can disrupt the double team combo block and force a negative play. Key the play side linebacker after the snap to see if he is flowing hard downhill or reading through the fullback, since a disciplined linebacker who stays patient will fill the cutback lane and limit the gain. Beware of user controlled defenders spying the run gaps or crashing the C gap immediately after the snap, since a well timed user blitz can beat the double team before it forms.
Check the defensive personnel pre-snap and confirm you are facing a base front with four or fewer defenders in the box before calling this play, since Duo struggles against stacked six or seven man fronts.
Use manual motion or the H Wing shift to identify if the defense is showing man or zone coverage on the perimeter, which tells you whether the linebackers will be sitting tight in run support.
Take control of the fullback and aim your lead block at the second level defender who threatens the cutback lane, since winning that block often decides whether the play goes for four yards or breaks for a big gain.
Pair this play with Power O and Inside Zone Wk in the same set to keep the defense guessing between gap schemes and zone schemes, forcing linebackers to hesitate on their run fits.
Call HB Duo on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains, and avoid it in obvious passing situations where defenses will sell out with extra defenders in the box.
