PA Power O is a play-action shot play off the Power O run look out of Strong I H Wing, designed to freeze linebackers and attack vertically once the run fake sells. The fullback and offensive line sell the Power O blocking scheme with the puller stepping across the formation, while the receivers release into a route combo built to attack the middle of the field and the boundary once safeties bite on the run action. This is a play-action shot built to punish man coverage and single high looks, with the primary read starting on the deep vertical or seam threat and working down to the underneath crosser or flat option if the safety stays home.
Identify single high safety shells pre-snap since Cover 1 and Cover 3 are the most vulnerable to the vertical shot once the run fake holds the linebackers. Watch for two high safeties staying deep at the snap, which usually means the defense read pass and the play-action fake will not manipulate the coverage, so check down quickly. Key the strong side linebacker and Mike linebacker reaction to the fullback and puller. If they crash hard on the run fake, the seam and crosser routes should come open behind them. Beware of a user controlled safety sitting in a lurk spot over the middle, since this play's crossing route is a common target for a rat in the hole or robber technique. Recognize edge blitz packages or a nano blitz off the strong side, since play-action requires extra protection and a fast interior blitz can collapse the pocket before the deep route develops.
Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when the defense is stacking the box expecting Power O or HB Dive out of this personnel, since the run fake carries more weight.
Check the safety depth pre-snap. If you see two high safeties rotating down into the box or a single high safety creeping up, that is your green light since it signals run support over pass coverage.
Hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or drag if you see man coverage with no safety help over the top, giving you a built in checkdown against blitz looks.
Sequence this play right after running actual Power O or HB Dive a couple times in the same drive so the linebackers and safeties key the run fake and bite, opening the play-action window.
Watch the play clock and snap timing against aggressive user blitzers. If you see a defender creeping toward the line pre-snap, consider audibling to a quick game concept instead since the deep shot needs protection time.
