Wing Close is the most compressed look in Strong I, pairing 22 personnel (two backs, two tight ends) with a wing tight end tucked just off the tackle and the second tight end tight to the line. Where standard Strong I sets split a receiver wide to at least threaten the perimeter, Wing Close pulls everything inside the numbers and creates an extra gap on the strong side before the ball is even snapped. That forces the defense to either walk a safety down and commit to the run fit or stay in a two-high shell and get outnumbered at the point of attack.
The run menu is the identity here. Inside Zone Split, Mtn Power O, and FB Dive all attack downhill with a fullback lead and a wing that can either arc block or seal the edge, while HB Stretch stresses the perimeter once the defense over-commits to the interior. The play-action package (PA FB Flat, PA Sprint HB Flat, Mtn Power Shot) is what makes the set dangerous online, because the same heavy alignment that sells run also puts your best tight end on a linebacker or a walked-down safety with no help outside.
The Gadget tag matters because Spacing HB Wheel and Mtn Double Slant give you legitimate passing concepts out of a look most opponents treat as automatic run. The wheel off spacing is an isolation route by design: the flat and hook routes clear the underneath zones and the back running the wheel usually ends up matched on a linebacker in man or running past the curl-flat defender in Cover 3. Motion the wing across the formation and you get a live read on man versus zone before the snap, which tells you whether to take the wheel or hit the spacing dig underneath.
Use this set in short yardage and inside the ten, where the extra gap and FB Dive or Mtn Power O give you a downhill answer that does not depend on beating a user in coverage.
Read the safety alignment before the snap: single high with a walked-down box means take HB Stretch or PA Sprint HB Flat to the perimeter, two-high means you have the numbers for Inside Zone Split or Mtn Power O.
Motion the wing across the formation to diagnose man versus zone, then commit to Spacing HB Wheel against man and Mtn Double Slant against any zone shell that rotates.
Call PA FB Flat only after you have established the inside run game, and hot route the backside tight end on a drag so you have a built-in answer if the flat defender jumps the fullback.
Save Mtn Power Shot for second and short or after a big run, when the safety has cheated down and your tight end can win a one-on-one release up the seam.
