PA Sprint HB Flat runs a play-action sprintout concept out of Strong I Wing Close, holding the run fake to freeze linebackers before the QB flows to the flat side. The diagram shows a deep corner route climbing outside from the outside receiver, a second receiver running a bench/flat-to-corner combo underneath, an HB releasing to the flat on the blue route for a quick outlet, and a wing back running a shallow drag underneath into the boundary. This is a play-action shot play designed to attack aggressive linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake, with the primary read progression going from the deep corner route to the HB flat route as the first and second reads, checking down to the shallow drag if the sprintout gets pressured.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a run-heavy front with linebackers stacked tight, since this play is built to exploit exactly that alignment with the play-action fake. Watch strong safety depth and rotation before the snap, if he sits shallow expecting run support he becomes vulnerable to the corner route breaking over the top. Post-snap, key the flat defender or the user-controlled linebacker, if he sprints to the HB flat route immediately without honoring the run fake the play-action element is not working and you should progress quickly to the drag or corner. This concept struggles against zone drops with a deep half safety already rotated over the top, since the corner route has no room to work and the flat and drag routes get squeezed by underneath zone defenders. Watch for contain defenders crashing the sprintout edge on a nano blitz, since the QB has limited time once he starts flowing outside and needs to get the ball out on rhythm to the flat or drag.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance when defenses expect run based on the Strong I personnel and Wing Close alignment.
Look for single high safety shells pre-snap since the deep corner route can win over the top if the safety bites on the run action.
Hot route the shallow drag runner into a deeper crosser if you diagnose zone coverage, since the underlying flat and drag routes overlap in shallow zone drops.
Pair this play with FB Dive and Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so defenders start keying run, making the play-action fake more effective when you call this.
If the sprintout gets pressured quickly, immediately check down to the HB in the flat rather than forcing the deep corner throw into a closing safety.
