Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Strong I Wing Close is an outside zone run play that sends the offensive line and lead blockers flowing laterally toward the play side edge before the HB presses the hole and reads his blockers upfield. The diagram shows the entire offensive line and fullback releasing in unison toward the sideline, with the HB taking a wide angle path behind them to stretch the defensive front horizontally before deciding to bounce outside, bend into a cutback lane, or press vertically. This is a pure zone run play (not a man beater or RPO), and the primary read progression starts with the edge defender or contain player, then works inside to the first wall of blockers created by the line's zone steps.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage before the snap, if they are lined up wide and squeezed to the sideline the stretch has nowhere to bounce. Key the flow of the linebackers after the snap, disciplined linebackers who stay square and read their gaps will erase the cutback lane that the HB is designed to find. Identify strong safety depth and run support angle, a safety cheating down into the box pre-snap signals an eight-man front that outnumbers the zone blocking scheme. Look for user-controlled defenders shooting gaps or spying the fullback, since aggressive user penetration up front can blow up the zone steps before the HB commits to a lane. This play struggles against fast-flowing 4-3 Under fronts and Cover 3 Cloud shells with disciplined edge defenders, but it beats slow-reacting Cover 2 or Cover 4 looks where the corners bail early and leave the alley wide open.

Usage Tips

Use HB Stretch when you see light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the run fit, since the lateral flow needs extra grass to work.

Check the play side cornerback and safety alignment before the snap, if the corner is playing off with soft outside leverage the bounce lane will be wide open.

Take control of the fullback or lead blocker to manually seal the edge defender if the CPU or opponent's user is crashing hard on the zone flow.

Pair this play with Mtn Power O or FB Dive in the same set to keep defenders honest on inside gap runs, then hit them with the wider stretch look once they start crashing down.

Best called on early downs (first and ten or second and short) when you want to stay ahead of the chains without overcommitting to a designed cutback.
