Breakdown

Inside Zone Split is a run play out of Strong I Wing Close with 22 personnel that hands the ball to the HB behind an inside zone blocking scheme, using the extra blockers in this heavy set to seal the interior gaps. The diagram shows the offensive line covering the box with zone step blocking while the HB path cuts to the strong side before working downhill, giving the runner a one cut read. There is no route concept here since this is a designated run play, so the primary read is the frontside double team and the playside linebacker fit, letting the HB decide between the A gap or bouncing to the B gap based on where the double team wins.

Defensive Reads

Pre snap, count the box defenders and check if the strong safety has crept down near the line, since that signals an extra run fitter against this heavy formation. Watch the Mike linebacker depth, if he is stacked tight behind the double team he is reading run fast and will try to shoot the gap. Post snap, key the playside defensive tackle, a two gap technique that holds the double team can clog both A and B gap reads for the HB. User controlled defenders flowing hard downhill from depth are the biggest threat to inside zone, look for a spy or a linebacker sitting in the window instead of firing. This play struggles against gap or man blitz fronts that cross faces at the snap, since those schemes beat zone blocking angles before the double team can climb.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs, especially first and second and short to medium yardage, to stay ahead of the sticks with a heavy personnel look.

Check the box count pre snap and only call this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders, since Strong I invites an extra defender against 22 personnel.

Use manual control on your HB to press the frontside double team and cut off the first sign of color, patience beats speed on this zone scheme.

Pair this with PA FB Flat or PA Sprint HB Flat off the same Wing Close look to punish linebackers who key run fits too fast.

Mix in HB Stretch or Mtn Power O from the same set so defenses cannot sit on inside zone tendencies out of Strong I.
