Breakdown

HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Strong I Close with 21 personnel, weak side flow toward the SE. The offensive line steps in unison to the weak side, with the FB leading through the hole to seal the first threat off the edge while the HB reads the zone blocking flow and picks his gap based on defensive flow. This is a pure run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read progression starts with the backside cutback lane before working to the frontside A and B gaps depending on linebacker fill.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify the strength of the defensive front, since a heavy weak side front (4-3 Under or Bear fronts shifted weak) clogs the intended cutback lane. Watch safety alignment, a single high safety shell with the strong safety cheating into the box signals a run blitz that this zone scheme can outflank with the cutback. Post-snap, key the backside defensive end and any user-controlled defender crashing down hard, since that opens the natural cutback lane behind the zone flow. If linebackers are flowing fast and staying square without over-pursuing, the frontside cuts get shut off and the HB should stay patient for the backside crease. Watch for a Mike linebacker blitz off the edge or A-gap plug, this can blow up the play design before the FB has time to seal the block.

Usage Tips

Run this play when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders, since the zone blocking scheme relies on numbers advantage at the point of attack.

Check the Mike linebacker depth pre-snap, if he is stacked tight to the line expect a quick fill and set up your cutback read early.

Use your FB lead block as a manual key by user-controlling him briefly to seal the first free hitter before releasing to your HB vision.

Pair this with HB Dive and HB Off Tackle from the same Strong I Close set to keep linebackers guessing on gap direction, since all three share similar formation flow but hit different lanes.

Best called on early downs (first or second and short to medium) when you want to stay ahead of the chains and set up play-action rollouts later in the series from the same look.
