HB Zone Toss out of Strong I Close with 21 personnel is a zone run play designed to get the HB moving laterally before turning up field. The diagram shows the FB and TE aligned tight with the O-line flowing in a zone blocking scheme toward the play side, while the HB takes a toss action and works outside before reading the blocks. This is a run play, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense, and the primary read progression starts with the play side edge block and cutback lanes created by the zone flow.
Watch the defensive ends and outside linebackers pre-snap, if they are crashing hard toward the toss side this play can get stuffed if you do not cut back in time. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side edge, that is a sign the CPU or opponent is keying the toss action. This play struggles against fast flow linebackers and disciplined edge defenders who stay home rather than overpursuing. It beats slow reacting fronts and defenses that bite on inside run fakes elsewhere in the set like HB Dive or FB Dive. Check safety depth pre-snap, if safeties are cheating into the box expect a quick flow to the edge and be ready to bounce it outside immediately.
Run this play on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage to keep defenses honest against your dropback passing game.
Check the box count pre-snap and if you see six or more defenders stacked in the box, consider audibling to a play-action pass instead.
Use your FB and TE zone blocks as your first read, patience is key so let the toss action develop before committing to a lane.
Pair this play with HB Stretch and HB Zone Wk in the same set to keep linebackers guessing on flow direction snap to snap.
Against aggressive fronts that crash hard on toss action, cut back against the grain since zone blocking naturally creates cutback lanes.
