Play diagram for Stutter Go's from Strong I Close in Madden 27

Quick Reference

Breakdown

Stutter Go's is a vertical shot play out of Strong I Close with 21 personnel that isolates three receivers on stutter-and-go routes designed to freeze defensive backs at the top of their zone drop or break their man leverage. The two outside receivers stutter at the top of the numbers then explode vertically up the sideline, while the inside slot receiver runs a hitch-and-go from the near side, giving you a three-way vertical stretch. There is no route drawn for the backfield, so this is a straight drop back shot play, and it is built primarily as a man beater against aggressive corners who bite on the hesitation move, with the outside go routes as the primary read progression followed by the slot stutter go as the secondary window.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap identify whether the corners are pressed on the line or sitting in soft man, since press man with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness this play exploits. Check the safety alignment: a single high safety in Cover 1 or Cover 3 has to choose which vertical threat to help on, and user-controlled defenders will often bite on the stutter move, opening the top of the route. Post-snap watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the intermediate middle, since that defender can undercut the slot receiver's stutter go if he reads the quarterback's eyes early. Against Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties splitting the field, the go routes get bracketed and the play loses its explosive ceiling, so expect the quarterback to hold the ball longer and check down. Watch linebacker depth and blitz timing, because if the defense sends a nano blitz or overload pressure, the quarterback has no built-in escape route on this concept and needs to get the ball out fast or take a sack.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or in shot situations like 2nd and short when you have already established the run game and safeties are creeping into the box. Pre-snap, look for single high shells like Cover 1 or Cover 3 where corners are playing tight man technique, since the stutter move is designed to make them false step. If the corner is playing off in Cover 2 or Cover 4, the stutter loses value and you should check to a quicker breaking concept instead. Hot route the backside receiver into a shallow drag or hitch if you see two deep safeties rotating hard to the strong side, giving yourself a checkdown against zone drops. Pair this play with Angle Out or WR Out earlier in a series so defenders start jumping underneath routes, then hit Stutter Go's off that tendency for an explosive shot play. Trust the outside go route first since it is the deepest and fastest developing threat, then work back to the slot stutter go if the corner recovers or a safety rotates over the top.
