PA Deep Cross runs from Strong I Close with 21 personnel and sells the play-action fake before attacking downfield off the crossing action. The diagram shows the outside receiver running a deep cross that stretches all the way across the field while the inline receiver on the opposite side pushes vertical, breaks outward, and settles on a deep out at the boundary. Underneath, the near back runs a shallow drag out of the backfield while the other back releases into a short flat route, giving the quarterback layered depth from the flat to the intermediate drag up to the deep cross and the deep out. This is a play-action shot play built to beat man coverage with the deep cross creating natural rub separation, and the primary read progression starts with the deep cross, works down to the underneath drag if the crosser is taken away, and works back to the deep out on the boundary as the low-percentage answer against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense shows two-high or single-high safety alignment, since two-high leaves more grass for the deep cross to settle into before the safety can rotate over. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if the linebackers step up hard on the play-action fake, the shallow drag and the deep cross both open up immediately behind them. Man coverage with no safety help over the top is the biggest weakness this play exploits, since the deep cross drags defenders through traffic and creates natural separation on the break. Zone coverage with a deep half safety sitting over the crosser's route can shut this down, especially if a linebacker sinks into the passing lane and forces the quarterback to hold the ball through the fake. User-controlled defenders who key the mesh point and stay home instead of biting on play-action can jump the shallow drag route, so watch for a spy or a robber sitting in that shallow zone before committing to the underneath read.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs or in play-action neutral situations so the run fake actually holds linebackers and freezes the second level.
Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, the deep cross has room to work underneath them, but if you see a single high safety rotate down, expect a robber or a lurk defender sitting in the crosser's window.
Hot route the flat route back into a shallow drag or delay if you are facing a hard edge blitz, since the play-action fake leaves the offensive line vulnerable to quick pressure off the edge.
Pair this with HB Zone Toss or HB Off Tackle earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake, then dial up PA Deep Cross to punish linebackers who bite on the mesh point.
Against man coverage, trust the deep cross to win through traffic since the route crosses the field and picks off trailing defenders, but against zone coverage look to the deep out on the boundary as your zone beater outlet.
