HB Stretch out of Strong I Close (21 personnel) shows the offensive line flowing laterally to the play side with the fullback leading through the hole to kick out or seal the edge defender, while the HB takes a wide zone path to press the edge before deciding whether to bounce outside or cut back. This is an outside zone run play designed to attack gap fits horizontally, not a man or zone beater in the passing sense since it has no route concept, and it forces defenders to flow hard which opens cutback lanes if the defense over-pursues. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is press the frontside edge first, then read the fullback's kick block and playside tackle's zone step to decide bounce, bang, or bend cutback.
Check safety alignment pre-snap, since a single high safety with the strong side overloaded often signals extra run support that can string this play out. Watch linebacker depth and flow, if the Mike and Will linebackers are cheating toward the strength of the formation before the snap, expect a fast flow defense that beats the stretch to the edge. Post-snap, key the playside defensive end and outside linebacker, if they stay disciplined and force the FB to block down rather than kick out, the cutback lane behind the center becomes the primary path. Beat aggressive 4-3 Under and 46 fronts that overload the strong side box, since their edge defenders often overrun the stretch path and open the backside cutback. Struggles against disciplined zone run fits and defenses that user the playside linebacker to stay square and read the fullback's block, since that eliminates both the bounce and cutback options.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive front to confirm whether the defense is stacked inside, since HB Stretch punishes fronts that are too tight to the box.
Hot route the TE or FB into a different block angle if you see an extra defender crashing the edge, especially against 4-3 Under fronts with the SAM crashing down.
This play works best on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage situations where you want to keep the defense honest against both inside and outside zone runs.
Pair HB Stretch with HB Dive and HB Off Tackle in the same drive to keep linebackers guessing between inside zone and outside zone paths, then hit Counter Weak later once they start over flowing to the stretch side.
Manually control the fullback on the kick out block in short yardage to guarantee the edge seal against aggressive edge defenders.
