Angle Out from Strong I Close (21 personnel) is a play-action-style dropback pass built off a five man protection with the FB and HB releasing into the pattern. The diagram shows the backside WR running a deep dig across the middle, the TE releasing vertically before breaking outside on a corner route, and the number 1 receiver (HB) running the angle route out of the backfield, sitting down in the flat after selling a release inside. The primary read progression starts with the angle route as the built-in man beater against linebackers, then works to the TE corner as the intermediate zone beater, with the deep crossing dig as the last resort against soft coverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment since the angle route out of the backfield is designed to pull a linebacker out of position in man coverage. Watch for a Mike or Will linebacker walked up near the box, which signals man coverage responsibility on the HB and a green light for the angle route conversion. Post-snap, key the flat defender and underneath zone dropper since the TE corner route needs that defender to vacate outside for the throw window to open. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, expect the deep dig to be less available due to a sinking safety, so prioritize the angle and corner combination instead. Beware of a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the shallow middle zone since that user-controlled defender can jump the angle route if the quarterback stares it down.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to see if the defense shifts a linebacker to account for the HB angle route out of the backfield since that route is designed to exploit man coverage on linebackers. If you see zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, work the TE corner route as your primary since it sits in the void between the flat defender and deep third defender. Hot route the backside outside WR into a shorter option like a curl if you are facing a two high shell and need a quicker underneath answer against Cover 2.
