Breakdown

Quick Toss out of Strong I Close (21 personnel) is a pure edge run play designed to get the HB outside quickly behind flow blocking. The diagram shows the HB tossed the ball and sprinting to the strong side edge, with the offensive line and FB releasing to seal the point of attack while a lone deep WR runs a vertical route to hold the corner and safety. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read is the edge blocking: watch the FB and pulling linemen to see if the alley is sealed, and decide whether to bounce outside or cut up if the edge is squeezed.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify whether the defense has a strong side outside linebacker or extra defender crashing the edge, since Quick Toss is vulnerable to fast flow defenders and edge blitzes that beat the pulling blockers to the spot. Look for safeties rotated down into the box on the strong side, which signals run support that can close the alley quickly. Post-snap, user the strong side linebacker or safety and attack the toss lane before the FB and lineman can get a clean angle, since a quick trigger defender can blow this play up for a loss. This run struggles against gap-sound fronts with disciplined edge setters, but it exploits defenses that overpursue or bite on inside run fakes. Watch for defensive ends that stay home versus crash down, since a patient edge defender forces the HB to bounce into a numbers disadvantage.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs or short yardage when you need a manageable gain and want to attack an aggressive front. Check the defensive front pre-snap and if the defense is stacked inside or in a 4-3 with the ends crashing down, this play has room to bounce outside untouched. Use your FB lead block as the primary blocking key: if the FB gets immediate penetration on the edge defender, take it up field, otherwise bounce it outside the blocks. Pair this with HB Off Tackle or Counter Weak from the same set to keep defenders guessing between edge speed and inside misdirection. Mix in Angle Out or PA Sprint HB Flat off the same Strong I Close look to punish defenses that start keying the toss action.
